How to stop your competitors clicking your ads and wasting your money on Pay Per Click - Google Adwords
How to stop your competitors using up your Ad-Words budget... Save money on PPC
Last week I attended a seminar on SEO and page ranking. The audience of SME owners and managers asked several questions and one of the unanswered ones was regarding Pay Per Click (PPC) adverts relating to competitors clicking your ads and using your budget.
With costs of clicks higher than ever and competition fierce this is a real concern for businesses. So I thought I would write this short article and offer a solution.
Google is quite good at spotting people clicking and bouncing and clicking repeatedly. Often they will refund your account if they notice incorrect behaviour. However they can’t stop your competitor clicking your advert in the morning, then at lunchtime, and again before going home.
That would be rare but even a fraction of that behaviour could cost you dearly and get you no new business. So it is well worth spending a little time each week or so checking your analytics. However Google Analytics, which is what most of us use, does not let you see this behaviour.
However someone put me on to clicky.com. Just like with Google you put some code in the pages you want to track. But Clicky will let you see visitors by IP address. This means you can see repeat visitors in detail. Not only that; if there is a green dollar sign next to the visit you know that they came from a paid advert.
If you see the same IP address arriving at your site from paid adverts repeatedly then you know something is not right. Twice or three times maybe fine, but when you see 8 or 10 its time to take action.
That action is to copy the IP address and go to your Google Adwords account. There in the relevant campaign choose settings and IP exclusions. Add each IP address here as you find them. This will stop that person seeing your advert.
This also means that if they are a competitor they will think you have stopped advertising and they can no longer monitor your ads.
Now IP addresses do change sometimes without relocating and some companies may choose to change so this is not infallible. However for the main part this is a very effective way to bank abusers and save money from your budget.
Clicky is free for the first website so if you only have one with Ad-Words happy days. Otherwise plans start at $9.99 a month for 10 sites. Still great value and you get a whole lot more than the feature mentioned. This may be something to consider as Google Analytics is removing features for free users and there are rumours of more of this happening as they look for monetise this product.
Please add any comments or questions at the bottom and share any top tips you have for saving money or doing better with PPC.
“EdgeRank is an algorithm developed by Facebook to decide what is displayed and where, in the News Feed.”
Most people who use Facebook to promote their business do not know about or understand EdgeRank.
Did you ever wonder why some stories make it in to your news feed and some don’t? Have you seen a lot form one friend but little from others? This is all controlled by Facebook and the EdgeRank algorithm.
In simple terms if Facebook sees that we interact with a post it ranks that post higher and then the next post from the same person is more likely to get further up our news feed. So if we interact a lot with one persons posts we will see them a lot more as Facebook assumes that is what we want.
This is all well and good as we don’t want our news feeds to be cluttered with nonsense. However it has dire consequences for our business pages.

How often should I update my website?
I often get this question and even more frequently I find clients have websites that have been built and left to “work”. Websites don’t just work – then need to be worked. In this article I discuss the whys and how’s of keeping your website fresh, relevant and “working”.
To me a working website is one that develops the brand, creates interest, gets found, generates leads and or sales. I see almost no point in having a static brochure style website; if you are going to have a website far better that it makes you money through lead generation if not actual sales ...
Is Google+ important for your SEO and rankings
You may have noticed lately a lot of articles, press releases and blog posts about Google+. I have seen several blog posts saying how easy Google+ is to use and how important it is. But these just look like they were written by Google staff or affiliates so perhaps we can dismiss these.
However that is not the whole story. Just as Pinterest is more popular in the USA so Google+ has take off there first. Some say that it is not relevant for the UK and Europe. Some say that they only have as many users (500 Million) because of Gmail and YouTube conscripting their existing users.
All that said Pinterest does drive retail sales in the UK and CR4L have seen some successful campaigns that gave great ROI. So what about Google+...
Google, Bing and other search engines give away credit - is it worth using?
A client just wrote to me and asked if they should use the Google Adwords voucher they had been sent...
In response I wrote the following which I thought was worth sharing in case anyone else was wondering if there was any value in one of these vouchers. This applies for Bing and other search engines as well. And if you don’t have a voucher then just Google “Adwords Vouchers” to be inundated with offers.
Yes it's worth using, but follow a few rules to maximise the results...
