It's Official... Social Media Sells - facts and figures from 2013 and help getting results marketing your business
81% of people are influenced by social media when making a purchase
In a previous article (http://www.cr4l.com/1/post/2013/10/word-of-mouth-marketing-demonstrably-effective.html ) I quoted a study by WOMMA (Word of Mouth Marketing Association) which showed that 72% of people have been influenced by customer reviews and a whopping 81% are influenced by their friends and social media.
According to a Nielson study carried out in September 2013 84% of people most trust “recommendations from people I know” when purchasing.
If you are not convinced that your business should have a social media presence then what else can I say? Well a lot actually...
Did you know that the UK is one of the top counties for percentage of GDP transacted online?
Currently we trade about 12% online with short term forecasts set at over 20%.
but its not just online transactions that are influenced by social media.
Know Your target Audience
Know who your target audience is and find out where they are. Mums are easy to find as they hang out at Mumsnet and Netmums. And they are a huge group with amazing purchasing power.
I successfully engaged with them in 2012 and had great success with a campaign and got great ROI.
Targeting is key and can be very effective.
Once you know who you are targeting and where they are its a matter of engagement. So many times I hear people say that their product or service is not interesting and they have nothing to say.
This is where you have to be creative. And there is one important fact that people overlook... most of the time you must not talk about you. Find out what your clients like and talk about that. It might be cars, or movies or football or anything.
The rule of thirds applies and I might even go further and say that the promote part of your social media activity should be just 10 or 15% of your output.
Relationships are built on common interests and two way conversations. Too many companies use Facebook and Twitter just to broadcast their message. that is an advert and doing it in this way is a complete waste of time - you might as well not bother.
So spend time finding interesting things that your audience might like and point them there.
Make it personal and give an opinion. Don't talk about what you had for breakfast but do talk about some interesting article video or picture you found. Share it. Lust look at the way cute pictures of kittens spread around the internet.
Plan your social media efforts for full effect
First off plan what you are going to do. Social media activity can take a long time out of your day. Do you have someone you can give this job to?
Commit to daily and weekly activity and stick to it! How many times have you come across a blog or Twitter account that hasn't been updated in a year or more? I have one client with a blog that has had just one post a year for the last 2 years. that is worse than having no blog because it gives a bad impression of your business. If you neglect your own blog like that what you will you do to the client?
Data and analytics are key - so monitor and refine constantly
Social media is a constantly evolving medium and you need to keep an eye on what is happening. How are people responding, what are they talking about and most importantly what results are you getting?
It takes at least 6 months to see any real impact from a campaign but from then on (typically) the returns get better and better. After 1 year of solid quality social media activity you can expect to get better return on your spend that with any other marketing stream.
So plan a manageable campaign that you can sustain for the long term. Focus on one or two sites or channels only. Then start - watch, listen - respond - adapt and ultimately get success.
